Introduction to Industrial Control Systems (ICS) Security

As IT security practitioners we seldom consider the security, reliability, and other issues associated with the power and HVAC support systems on which we depend. Beyond that, there are critical infrastructures responsible for production of community and backup power and major facility HVAC. Although many IT security tools and techniques can be applied to protect these critical support systems, there are also many that can cause delays, damage, accidents, and even death. This presentation will introduce the unique concepts of ICS security and reliability and begin to address the concerns with IT security tools and techniques.

Jack Oden leads a 10-year, $200 million U.S. government contract for Parsons for cyber security in the area of Industrial Control Systems (ICS) for mission-critical infrastructure. Jack often does sensitive work for the U.S. government, but also contributes on the commercial side. The Parsons Corporation, which is based in California, is diversified and involved in varied Defense, Security, and Infrastructure projects worldwide.

As a SCADA Security Architect, he creates strategies and plans to aid cyber security compliance with legal, regulatory, and policy requirements, such as NIST Special Publications (SP) 800-53 and 800-82. His team adds their expertise to advise on supervisory control and data acquisition, energy management control, and other building management systems. Jack is also a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army. See:
